Treatment for Dense Thickets of Small Trees

This project proposal uses pre-commercial thinning and chipping to create a healthier, more attractive, and fire-safe forest.  Chipping is a quick, clean and efficient way to reduce the fuels and unsightly mess from a pre-commercial thinning project.  It has the added benefit of eliminating the need for burning piles, and chipping is more visually appealing and easier on the soil than mulching or mastication.

Dense stands of small trees will be thinned and chipped, leaving the largest, healthiest trees.  The trees favored for retention will be western larch, ponderosa pine, Douglas fir, and lodgepole pine in that order.  Other species of trees that occur more sporadically, such as spruce, and subalpine fir will be retained in small areas to promote diversity.  All aspen, and some scattered patches of dense trees will be retained for wildlife habitat.

The cut trees will be chipped on-site to reduce the residual fire-hazard created by the slash.  Trees less than 4 feet tall will be cut, but may be left on the ground (not chipped) and crushed as they are driven on by the chipper.

SampleThe initial finances will be as follows:
